Our favorite weekend of the year has come and gone but not without a goodies bag of memories and stories for years to come. SHAPER hosted the 4th Self Shape Surf Festival presented by Vissla, which rallied the surf community for a 12 hour beach festival featuring a surf contest, beer garden, and live music at Seaside Reef.

Daniella Manini (@daniellamanini_art) set the mood for the festival with commissioned artwork featuring an deep orange sun setting beyond sea of blue a-frames. The color pallet was classic featuring contrasting silhouettes of navy palms and an accent of the iconic faded jade #11 lifeguard tower.

Keeping with the true-grit DNA we wrapped the event site with close to 300 up-cycled wooden pallets that were up-cycled again following the event. Vissla provided athletes with a lounge featuring the famed Dream Steeple, shaded surfboard lockers, and free hair cuts provided by Byrd Hair.

Entropy Resins and Mizu joined us this year as our sustainability partners in efforts to host a more environmentally responsible event. Our activities included sponsored beach clean-ups the day before the festival and the day after, plastic free water stations, plastic free beer garden, bio-based epoxy resins for all boards glassed at Shaper.

The newest addition to the festival was the addition of our Backyard Beer Garden hosted by Fall Brewing and Duck Foot Brewing. The crowd spilled into the beer garden at noon and it was shoulder to shoulder through sunset. The beer garden was made plastic free thanks to our friends at Mizu for providing each beer garden attendee with a free stainless steel cup.

A few of our favorite bands closed out the festival. The award winning The Verigolds opened up the SHAPER music stage followed by The Gloomies and then The Pesos closed out the sunset session.
