Lawrence Lee Gill III was our first hire in the history of Shaper Studios. Lee worked a couple industrial garages down from Shaper doing performance fabrication for off-road trucks. We thought he might be able to help us sand surfboards and the rest is history.
In the beginning, none of us had any clue what we were getting into but we knew we were going to have a ton of fun surfing every morning and opening up the surf shop everyday. The first couple of years were heavily documented by Michael Weybret in a reality series we called Foam & Friends. If you want to get an idea for the dynamic that Lee brought to the business, it's all there in full color.
After a couple years of surf shop antics, Lee became one of the most influential members of the team and picked up his first modeling gig with The People's Movement on a footwear campaign.
Today, Lee travels the world modeling and enjoying an extremely successful go at it (follow him at @lleegill). When in San Diego you will find this Shaper Original and his original charm posted up in the La Jolla beach front parking lot with his collection #selfshape surfboards.
Happy birthday Lawrence.
