Shaper Studios partnered up with coastal conservation organization Wildcoast for the annual surf contest held at one our favorite rights, San Miguel, located in Baja California. The contest winner was Josh Johnson from Imperial Beach, California. Josh won himself a new surfboard blank and a trip to Shaper Studios San Diego to shape his first surfboard with our crew later this month. Congratulations to everyone for supporting the conservation of coastal Baja.
PRESS RELEASE
The 3rd Annual Walter Caloca Surf Open Went Off Once Again at San Miguel, Ensenada
WILDCOAST and UAPO Bring Together Surfers from Mexico, the United States, Venezuela and South Africa at San Miguel on March 23 and 24
The Boys Finalists: Josh Johnson, Gavin Lache, Daniel Dedina and Dakotah Hooker
Once again the forecast looked promising for the Annual Walter Caloca Surf Open in the days leading up to the contest. Now the largest surf contest in Baja California, there was high expectations for an amazing event and this year did not fail. With over 80 participants, sunny skies and amazing surf, this was the most successful event yet.
The contest, in its third consecutive year, is in honor of Walter Caloca, a young Ensenada surfer who tragically passed away several years ago. Walter was loved by his peers and is remembered through a weekend of high caliber youth and adult surfing, music, raffles, a beach and arroyo cleanup and many other activities.
Saturday saw the youth, bodyboard and stand up paddle competition as well as a cleanup of the beach and arroyo around San Miguel. Winning the boys division was Imperial Beach local, Josh Johnson. Also in the final were Daniel Dedina (2nd), Gavin Lache (3rd) and Dakotah Hooker (4th). Miguel Torres was crowned champion of the very competitive bodyboard division, Mark “Kiwi” Field won the stand up paddle and Arias Chavira dominated the under 16 girls. The beach cleanup, sponsored by Pawa and in conjunction with Pronatura, removed 440 pounds of trash from the beach and arroyo at San Miguel. On Saturday evening, Ensenada non-profit Surf Ens, a driving force behind the recently established Bahia Todos Santos World Surfing Reserve which includes San Miguel, presented on the reserve at Boules Restaurant overlooking the bay.
Surfers were greeted Sunday morning with amazing conditions and the boulder point at San Miguel did not disappoint. Forty four men from four different countries showcased an array of talent on perfect overhead waves for a chance to win the Open Mens division. It was South Africa’s Brandon Roberts that took the win over a stacked group of finalists including Cody Sherman (2nd), Jaime Noia (3rd) and Rodger “Honey Duck” Eales (4th). The women and longboard also surfed on Sunday and it was none other than local charger Naara Nunez and Miguel Arroyo winning those divisions respectively.
WILDCOAST and UAPO would like to thank the Caloca family and all of the sponsors that made this event possible: PAWA, Baja Bound Insurance, Snugtop, Dakine, Emerald City, Future Fins, Hoffman Surfboards, Coral Marina, Estero Beach, Albergue temporal, Sector 9, Black Flies, Matuse, Rip Curl Paific Beach, James Cutri, Shaper Studios, Hippy Tree, En El Mar Me Encontraras, Katin Surf Shop, Rerip, Jersey, Boules, CETYS, La Contra and San Miguel Surfboards.

Check out our friends at www.saltybeards.com and get inspired.
The original plan for SaltyBeards.com was to try and help out our local homeless community. We started off by donating 10% of our online store sales towards clothing the homeless. After a few months we’ve gained great support from people all over the world. Now we have been able to increase the donations to 25%. More recently Salty Beards spent a day in Venice Beach California. We met a man named John who was living on the streets. He see’s people surfing everyday but never had the opportunity of trying to catch a few waves for himself. Until now. We rented him a board, gave him some new boardshorts and pushed him into a couple waves. He was beyond thrilled. It was a great experience for both of us. We spent the rest of the afternoon clothing any homeless we came across. Stoked faces all around. See more at SaltyBeards.com
